University of Michigan Terminates Co-Offensive Coordinator Matt Weiss Amid Computer Access Crimes Investigation
The University of Michigan has announced the termination of co-offensive coordinator, Matt Weiss, following an investigation into alleged computer access crimes at the school's football facility. The university has not released any further details about the nature of the alleged crimes or the status of the investigation. However, athletic director, Warde Manuel, stated that the termination decision was made "after a review of University policies."
This decision comes as a surprise as Weiss has only been the co-coordinator for one season and with the school overall for two seasons, both of which ended in the College Football Playoff. He shared playcalling duties on offense this season and his firing means that Michigan will need a new coach at one of the program's most important positions. Weiss oversaw the rise of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who broke out as one of the country's star quarterbacks this past season.
It is worth noting that Weiss' firing is expected to be "for cause" and there is a clause in his contract that includes "for cause" firings for both conviction of a felony, along with a conduct clause for morality. Weiss made $850,000 in base salary and was slated to earn $400,000 in bonuses.
In a statement, Weiss acknowledged the "ongoing investigation" and stated that he is "fully cooperating" with investigators. He also expressed his pride in the success achieved over the last two seasons and gratitude to all of the Michigan players, coaches and staff. He said, "The potential of Team 144 knows no bounds.
